Village chief to challenge DAP sec-gen in Negeri Sembilan

A David versus Goliath battle is shaping up in the battle for the Chennah seat in Negeri Sembilan.

This contest will see political novice Perikatan Nasional (PN)’s Rosmadi Arif going up against two-term incumbent Anthony Loke.

While Loke enjoys a national profile as transport minister and DAP secretary-general, Rosmadi is less known.

However, what is certain is that he and Loke are well acquainted.

After the disastrous floods of December 2021, Loke visited Kampung Chennah where he donated a freezer and supplied the machinery necessary for cleaning works.

Incidentally, Rosmadi was the village chief of Kampung Chennah.

“I consider him (Rosmadi) the hero because he saved 70 people who were trapped at the Kampung Esok Orang Asli village when the floods happened,” said Loke.

Chennah is one of four state constituencies located within the borders of the Jelebu parliamentary constituency.

During the 2018 Negeri Sembilan legislative assembly elections, of the four seats, Pakatan Harapan picked up only Chennah while the other four went to BN.

This constituency is ethnically mixed - Malays (46.28 percent), Chinese (44.26 percent), Indians (2.05 percent), and others (7.42 percent).

Election Commission data showed that during the parliamentary elections last November, PN won 14.92 percent of the vote in the Chennah constituency, while the rest were almost equally split between BN and Harapan.

Rosmadi’s candidacy was announced by Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu during a gathering in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

Faizal only named 34 candidates and left two more - Jeram Padang and Sri Tanjung - to be named in the future.

Of the 34 candidates, 15 are from Bersatu and 13 are from PAS. Another six are from Gerakan.

The most notable candidate is Eddin Syazlee Shith, who will be fielded for Juasseh. Eddin won the Kuala Pilah parliamentary seat in 2018 as a BN candidate before defecting in 2020. He failed to retain the seat in the parliamentary elections last November.

Another prominent candidate is Bersatu exco member and lawyer Danni Rais, who will be fielded in Klawang. He is the son of former Jelebu MP and Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim.

Meanwhile, Bersatu member Ahmad Raihan Muhamad Hilal will be challenging incumbent menteri besar Aminuddin Harun (PKR) in Sikamat while PAS’ Rozmal Malakan will be challenging former menteri besar Mohamad Hasan (Umno) in Rantau.
