Ahead of a Perikatan Nasional-led rally planned in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, police said that no attempts will be made to prevent any individuals linked to the gathering from entering the city centre.
Speaking during a press conference at Dang Wangi police station tonight, Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said police will not go to the extent of obtaining a court order that would ban named individuals from attending the Malaysia Day rally.
“We will not go to that extent. We don’t want to overreact.
“We will prepare ourselves [...] Our aspiration, just like the government’s aspiration, we don’t want to inconvenience the people,” he said when asked on the matter.
“So long as public order is not affected, we will take the necessary legal action under the law (Peaceful Assembly Act 2012).
“This (law) is something that the organisers are aware of.
“They know the implications of the law. This (rally) is not the first time,” he said.
Non-compliance with PAA
Shuhaily also said that several organisers had notified the police of their planned gathering this Saturday.
However, he said none of the notices complied with requirements under the PAA, for example, to confirm the gathering location and obtain permission from the owner of the premise where their gathering will be held.
“That in itself has made police duties difficult.
“I really hope that (rally) organisers can be more responsible to help us coordinate our duties,” he said.
Earlier today, PN-linked Gerakan Selamatkan Malaysia secretariat said the venue for their gathering would be in the Malay enclave of Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur, which had been one of the main stages for the reformasi protest more than two decades ago.
Initially, the organisers said the gathering would take place outside the Sogo shopping mall.
However, PN Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said on Tuesday that PN is open to moving the rally to the street in front of Yayasan Selangor in Bukit Bintang if the original venue in front of Sogo is not suitable. - Mkini
