Jamal calls off 'red shirts' gathering

Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos said the “red shirts movement” will not be gathering in Kuala Lumpur this weekend.

In a statement, he said the decision was made after Perikatan Nasional Youth switched its Saturday rally venue to Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

“The ‘red shirts movement’ would only gather if (PN Youth) were gathering at Sogo (shopping centre) or Bukit Bintang (as originally planned),” he said.

Jamal said the “red shirts” will not be involved in any gathering in Kampung Baru.

“I hope that the gathering will be peaceful and conducted in an orderly fashion,” he said.

PN Youth are planning to gather tomorrow to protest against the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ decision to withdraw charges against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi after the court established a prima facie case against him for corruption.

Initially, PN Youth wanted to gather in front of Sogo and also considered Bukit Bintang - both popular weekend shopping locations.

However, organisers announced yesterday that they will instead gather tomorrow afternoon after Zohor prayers at the Kampung Baru mosque.

As of last night, organisers have yet to comply with requirements under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 to properly notify the police.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain told a press conference last night the notice submitted by the organisers did not properly state the venue of the gathering or the names of the organisers.

Without providing all the relevant details, the police are unable to make the necessary preparations to facilitate the rally, said Shuhaily.

“Previously, it was said that the rally would be held near a shopping centre in the capital, but the latest intelligence received by the police is that it would be held at one of the mosques in Kampung Baru.

“That’s not helping us because there is no clear decision from the organisers. This will make it difficult for many parties including road users,” he said. - Mkini
