Johor unity govt issue only for elites, says Umno Youth man

PETALING JAYA: Attention should be given to addressing the needs of the people instead of discussing a unity government in Johor, says state Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros.

Noor Azleen said the rising cost of living and problem of food shortages were on people’s minds.

The question of a unity government “is not what the people want”, he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia. “The people are expecting leaders and politicians to take action about food supplies, insufficient basic needs, rice shortages and show how the government can effectively handle the issue of the rising cost of living.”

He said the unity government issue “will only benefit the ‘elite politicians’ who are currently in power”.

Noor Azleen’s comments came in response to remarks by Johor DAP vice-chairman Teo Nie Ching last week. She was reported as saying there has been no discussion on the formation of a unity government in Johor, where Barisan Nasional forms the government.

She said Pakatan Harapan, which is a partner with BN in the federal government, would continue to serve as a check and balance for the state administration.

However, she did propose setting up a unity government secretariat at the state level, adding that such a committee would facilitate the dissemination of information to the people, and bring about closer cooperation between the parties in the unity government. - FMT
