9-fold increase in summons collection, half from mobile app

Police hope to reduce or do away with counters to settle traffic summonses as the result of the success in getting errant motorists to pay online through the MyBayar Saman app.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police collected RM302.4 million from January to August this year through 1,913,840 summonses issued and paid.

Bukit Aman traffic investigations and enforcement director Mat Kasim Karim said from the total, RM169.2 million was collected through the MyBayar Saman app.

“We have adopted the concept of cashless payment proposed by the government to enable members of the public to easily settle summonses using the online app.

“The initiative has proven to be a success because last year only RM37.5 million, involving 207,217 summonses, was collected.

“Those who were issued summonses need not go to the counters at police stations to settle their summonses.

“Maybe in three years’ time, we may reduce the number of counters or not use them at all because the three to five officers manning these counters can be utilised for other enforcement duties,” he said at Bukit Aman here today.

Mat Kassim also suggested that the MyBayar Saman app be improved or upgraded to include services like renewal of licences for weapons or to issue copies of reports.

Number of deaths on the road increasing

Meanwhile, Mat Kassim said the number of deaths on roads, especially those involving motorcyclists, during the first eight months of this year had reached alarming figures.

He said during the period, 394,890 accidents were recorded involving 4,366 deaths. From that figure, motorcyclists accounted for 2,641 deaths, ranging from ages 14 to 25.

“Investigations revealed that in some of the accidents involving motorcycles, there were no brake marks at the scene, meaning there was no effort to stop.

“Other accidents were due to beating the traffic lights, using handphones while riding or lack of focus,” he said. - FMT
