Daim, wife axe part of legal team handling graft case

Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and his wife Na’imah Abdul Khalid have terminated the service of two lawyers in the legal team representing them in the ongoing MACC probe and prosecution.

A source today confirmed with Malaysiakini that the discharge involving former solicitor-general Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, who is now a practising lawyer, and lawyer Alex Tan, happened Wednesday (Jan 24), due to “a difference of opinion” in the conduct of the cases.

The couple had earlier retained the law firm of Wong Kian Kheong as solicitors. Also retained were M Puravalen and Yunos Shariff.

It is worth noting that both Daim and Na’imah are also qualified lawyers, with the former still holding a practising certificate.

On Tuesday (Jan 23) Na’imah claimed trial for failing to abide by a MACC notice to disclose her assets.

The 66-year-old faces up to five years in jail and a fine of up to RM100,000.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki yesterday said Daim is expected to be charged in court next week, after being discharged from the hospital a few days ago.

The 85-year-old tycoon is expected to face at least one charge of failure to declare several properties he and his wife have an interest in.
