Cops probing duo for sedition linked to Islamic affairs council issue

Police are investigating two individuals under the Sedition Act as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act over the National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) issue.

However, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Shuhaily Mohd Zain’s media statement did not reveal the identities of the two.

According to him, two investigation papers have been opened. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the CMA.

“The case is still in the investigation stages and the police advise the public not to make any speculations which can disrupt investigations.

“The police also wish to remind the public to be considerate regarding sensitive issues involving public order and national security,” Shuhaily (above) added.

Malaysiakini is contacting the police for further information.

‘Misunderstanding’

In the past week, police reports were lodged against DAP lawmaker Ngeh Khoo Ham for suggesting that non-Muslim constitutional experts be appointed to the committee reviewing the jurisdiction of the Syariah Court as per the Federal Constitution.

The Beruas MP, who has since apologised, courted flak from both foes and allies. Whereas DAP attributed his proposal to a “misunderstanding”.

Prior to this, he found support from an unlikely source in the form of former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker.

On the same day, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also the MKI chairperson, reminded non-Muslims not to meddle in Islamic affairs.

Following this, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim supported the ruler’s stand and told non-Muslims to write to the MKI in the event of concerns to resolve issues amicably. - Mkini
