Kedah urged to make Thaipusam a fixed state holiday

Earlier today, menteri besar Sanusi Nor said the Kedah government had set Jan 25 as an occasional holiday for Thaipusam.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) has asked the Kedah government to fix Thaipusam as an annual public holiday, following the announcement by menteri besar Sanusi Nor earlier that Jan 25 would be an occasional holiday.

MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam said such a move would eliminate the periodic discussion whenever the festival is approaching.

“This suggestion aims to provide clarity in showcasing the Kedah government’s commitment to manage non-Islamic affairs efficiently,” Subramaniam said in a statement.

He added that Sanusi’s announcement earlier today demonstrated a diverse and inclusive leadership, despite claims that the menteri besar was a religious extremist.

Subramaniam said the action taken proved that the Perikatan Nasional state government was genuinely concerned about other religions.

“This move reflects the commitment of the state government to maintaining harmony and unity in the nation,” he said.

Earlier today, Sanusi said the Kedah government had set Jan 25 as an occasional holiday for Thaipusam.

He added that the go-ahead was given during the state executive council meeting today. - FMT
