Construction worker jailed 3 years for sexually assaulting teen in elevator

KUALA LUMPUR
A construction worker was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to receive one stroke of the cane by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a girl in a lift last week.

Judge Kafli Che Ali handed down the sentence on G Mohana Das, 40, and ordered him to serve the sentence from the date of arrest on July 15.

The court also ordered him to undergo counselling for a year in prison and to be placed under police supervision for a year after serving his time.

He was charged with committing the offence against the 16-year-old victim in a lift at a people’s housing project in Cheras here at 11.30am on July 15.

Framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, the charge provides for imprisonment for up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the girl was in the lift on her way to her house on the 17th floor.

The accused, who entered the elevator at the same time, touched the girl’s hand and then her chest when she pushed him away.

She reported the incident to her mother, who lodged a police report on the same day.

Mohana Das, who was unrepresented, told the court during mitigation that he was separated from his wife and was supporting a child and his mother.

Deputy public prosecutor Noor Shakira Aliana Alias appeared for the prosecution. - FMT
