Meta apologises for ‘royal’ translation error

Facebook owner Meta has apologised for a mistranslation by the platform’s automated translation feature, involving a Facebook post regarding Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s installation ceremony on Saturday.

Meta Southeast Asia public policy director Rafael Frankel said the “technical error” has since been resolved.

We deeply respect the Malaysian royal family, and sincerely apologise to RTM, the Johor State Council and others impacted by this event,” he said in a statement today.

The original Facebook post by RTM on Saturday was a congratulatory message written in Malay.

It reads: “Junjung kasih kepada Yang Maha Mulia Raja-Raja Melayu yang telah memberikan kepercayaan dan penghormatan kepada Sultan Ibrahim, Yang di-Pertuan Agong ke-17.”

For some Facebook users, however, it was automatically translated as: “Condolences to His Majesty the Malay kings who have given trust and respect to Sultan Ibrahim, the 17th Pertuan Agong”.

A screenshot of the erroneous machine translation was circulated online, prompting Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil to hit out against an unnamed individual for wrongly accusing him and RTM of posting an offensive remark against the king.

RTM had said it did not upload any content in English regarding the Agong’s coronation and said has lodged a police report. - Mkini
