PETALING JAYA: Senator Dr RA Lingeshwaran has filed for defamation against Urimai chief P Ramasamy over comments the latter made in an article published by Malaysiakini, in which he allegedly said Lingeshwaran lacked common sense and should not be in the medical profession.
“The article implied that Lingeshwaran was unfit to be a senator, wasn’t qualified to be in the medical profession and untrustworthy as a senator or medical doctor. It also implied that he was a dishonest person.
Lingeshwaran’s lawyers Gunaseelan & Associates said in an Aug 21 filing at the Butterworth sessions court, Harapan Daily reported. The defaming terms as above have caused injury to his character and reputation,
Lingeshwaran, a DAP leader, is claiming unspecified general and exemplary damages, and for Ramasamy to be subject to an injunction to prevent him from repeating his allegations.
On April 30, Lingeshwaran was reported to have objected to the idea that UiTM open its doors to non-Bumiputera parallel pathway students and graduates.
He reportedly said Bumiputera-only universities should continue to serve Bumiputera students exclusively, while non-Bumiputera or non-Malay students could take the parallel pathway for medical specialty training.
On May 2, Ramasamy responded by saying that Lingeshwaran lacked basic common sense. - FMT
