Lawyers warn of action over defamatory claims against Zara Qairina's mother

 

A team of lawyers representing the mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir has warned that legal action will be taken against any party found spreading defamatory statements against their client and her family.

KOTA KINABALU: A team of lawyers representing the mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir has warned that legal action will be taken against any party found spreading defamatory statements against their client and her family.

In a statement issued today, the legal team for Noraidah Lamat, led by Shahlah Jufri, said they viewed seriously any dissemination, repetition or publication of defamatory remarks directed at the deceased's mother.

"Any party who continues to make or spread baseless allegations will face legal action without further notice," they said.

The legal team also comprises Datuk Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Farrah Nasser and Elhanan James.

In the statement, the lawyers said they had taken note of posts and comments by several Facebook account holders containing defamatory accusations, harassment and insults against Noraidah and her family in relation to Zara Qairina's death.

They said Noraidah lodged a police report on April 9 against the individuals behind the accounts.

"The allegations are untrue, baseless and constitute serious defamation, which has affected her reputation as well as the emotional well-being of her family.

"Any comments or speculation that go beyond acceptable limits are inappropriate, potentially sub judice in nature and may interfere with the administration of justice," the statement read.

The inquest into Zara Qairina's death at the Coroner's Court here is scheduled to resume from April 13 to 17. - NST
