'We are already in a crisis,' PM warns of looming price increases

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today urged the public to brace for price hikes, which are expected to hit soon due to the global oil crisis sparked by the Iran War.

In a speech this morning, he urged civil servants to be prepared to help the government address issues that arise.

“We must acknowledge that we are already in a crisis. Even though some people might think we are not in trouble because we have not reached the stage of having to queue at petrol stations.

“That is incorrect. There is already a problem because prices are already increasing (like) prices for fertilisers.

“I visited a Felda in Pengerang, in Kota Tinggi, on Sunday. While the prices of fertilisers have not seen a steep increase yet, it will be because the percentage of our fertiliser imports is high.

“This is what I want you to see. So, do not wait until we are in trouble and be surprised. It is our duty to explain... We have to be wise in managing this problem,” he said.

Anwar was addressing a group of civil servants at the Transport Ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya.

Oil passes Hormuz, prices spike still

The prime minister said there were multiple factors behind the increase in prices of petroleum-based products.

While Malaysia has managed to secure safe passage for its oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, he said other costs have increased due to the conflict.

They include increases in insurance fees for maritime transportation and a hike in freight charges.

“This means that costs to process the oil that is reaching Pengerang (oil refineries in Johor) have also gone up,” Anwar explained. - Mkini
