A new law to regulate foreign e-commerce sites is on the cards as the government seeks to tackle counterfeit goods being sold online and better protect local small enterprises.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Armizan Ali said the law is also aimed at fostering accountability among foreign e-commerce platforms, as they currently are not required to have a Malaysian representative.
According to Malay Mail Online, Armizan said the proposed law could require foreign platforms to register a Malaysian entity and comply with local regulations.
The ministry plans to table the proposal in the cabinet next month, Armizan told a special chamber sitting in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
