Johor polls: PN to contest in 33 seats

Perikatan Nasional components Bersatu, PAS, MIPP, and Pejuang separately announced candidates in 33 out of 56 seats in Johor ahead of Saturday’s nominations.

In four separate events tonight, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin announced 16 candidates, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar named 11, MIPP president P Punithan named five, and Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir named one - all 33 to contest under the PN banner.

Despite all four parties organising their own functions, Samsuri holds the power to sign the authorisation letters for all of the coalition’s candidates.

It is not immediately clear why no candidates were announced for the remaining 23 seats.

In Pagoh, top Bersatu leaders gather at Muhyiddin’s parliamentary service centre, along with party supporters.

The party’s line-up is anchored by former Johor menteri besar Dr Sahruddin Jamal, who will defend Bukit Kepong.

Sahruddin, who narrowly retained the seat during BN’s landslide victory in 2022, now also serves as PN’s Johor chief and is expected to spearhead the coalition’s state campaign.

Bersatu’s list also saw Layang-Layang incumbent Abdul Mutalip Abdul Rahim, who quit Umno after a BN decision to swap the seat with MCA, now being fielded on a PN ticket.

In Bakri, Samsuri announced PAS’ 11 candidates along with party leaders, including Johor PAS chief Mahfodz Mohamed.

Like Bersatu, the PAS line-up also featured a new entry with former Bersatu leader Mazlan Bujang, who joined the party earlier today, fielded in Kahang.

PAS is also fielding a young local candidate, Hasnul Hakimi Hussien, in Endau, where former Bersatu assemblyperson Alwiyah Talib has returned to Umno and is now contesting under the BN banner.

PAS is also going up against DAP in Jementah through Saifullah Abdul Wahab.

No Gerakan

Separately, the MIPP’s line-up comprises five candidates in semi-urban seats.

Leading the line-up is human resources manager Anna Pravina Segaran, 27, who will contest the Kota Iskandar seat, making her the youngest among the party’s candidates.

The other candidates are textile entrepreneur Lina Manoh Manogaran, 41 (Bukit Permai); businessperson Jeevakumar Dhayalan, 41 (Paloh); medical doctor Dr Ariventharan Anandan, 41 (Pemanis); and property businessperson Vela Tebakumaran, 36 (Permas).

In another event, Mukhriz announced the party’s sole candidate in Gambir, Suraya Sulaiman.

Another PN component, Gerakan, earlier today announced that the party will not be fielding any candidates.
