PETALING JAYA: Pas and Bersatu will campaign separately in the Johor state election despite contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) logo and receiving their appointment letters from the same authority.
Both parties will also run their own election machinery and campaign teams in the constituencies they are contesting.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed the arrangement, saying cooperation between the two parties would continue independently on the ground.
"Yes, each party will use its own machinery. In terms of the relationship between Pas and Bersatu, both will work independently to ensure the success of their respective candidates," he told Utusan Malaysia.
The separate approach was also reflected in the announcement of candidates, with Pas unveiling its PN candidates in Bakri, while Bersatu held a separate event in Pagoh.
Traditionally, PN announces candidates from all component parties jointly ahead of an election.
Earlier on June 23, PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said he had signed appointment letters for PN candidates from Pas, Bersatu, Gerakan, Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) and Pejuang. https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2026/06/1470206/pejuang-and-parti-ci…
He said each party contesting under the PN banner would be fully responsible for its own candidates, machinery, campaign management and performance in the seats it contests.
"Now is the time for all PN component parties, leaders and machinery to focus fully on the campaign. Our priority is to offer leadership with integrity, people-centric policies and fresh hope for the wellbeing of the people of Johor," he said.
Samsuri added that parties contesting under the PN logo must take full responsibility for their candidate selection and campaign performance.
Tuan Ibrahim said all PN component parties had an equal right to use the coalition's logo.
He said Samsuri had acted fairly by allowing all component parties to contest under the PN banner, dismissing previous claims of restrictions.
"There was so much slander suggesting Samsuri would not allow Bersatu to contest under the PN logo. In reality, all PN members are entitled to use the PN logo," he said.
Tuan Ibrahim added that although Pas had ended its political cooperation with Bersatu, both parties should continue strengthening PN ahead of elections.
Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the party remained open to cooperation, provided all parties set aside differences.
"All parties must focus on strengthening the coalition as an alternative to the current government. If internal conflicts are minimised, the PH-BN government can be replaced," he said.
Nomination for the Johor election will be held tomorrow, with polling set for July 11. - NST
