Their win now assures Malaysia of a semi-final berth as Hang Yee-Eng Cheong will face compatriots and top seeds Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong in their last-eight match tomorrow.
Hang Yee-Eng Cheong, the world No 73 pair, took just 38 minutes to beat the 40th-ranked Singaporean duo 21-18, 21-14 in their last-16 match today.
This will be the first quarter-final appearance for the Malaysian duo in a World Tour Super 300 tournament.
Azriyn-Wee Kiong had earlier defeated compatriots Boon Xin Yuan-Lwi Sheng Hao 21-17, 22-20 in their last-16 match.
Also through to the last eight are world No 23 duo Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting who defeated lower-ranked Taiwanese pair Chou Yun An-Sung Yi Hsuan 21-13, 21-17 in 42 minutes. They will meet Korean pair Kim Hye Jeong-Moon In Seo in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing are the only mixed doubles pair left in the running. They defeated Taiwanese pair Cheng Kai Wen-Liu Chiao Yun 21-13, 21-12 in their second round match.
They will face Korean pair Cho Song Hyun-Jeong Na Eun in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Separately, another Malaysian men’s doubles pair pulled off an upset to reach the quarter-finals by defeating a higher-ranked Chinese duo.
World No 120 pair Chia Wei Jie-Teo Ee Yi overcame world No 30 Hu Ke Yuan-Lin Xiang Yi 23-25, 21-16, 21-13 in 58 minutes.
They will face Taiwan’s Wei Chun Wei-Po Chih Yang in tomorrow’s quarter-final.
Malaysia is also assured of a place in the men’s singles quarter-finals, with Cheam June Wei set to take on Eogene Ewe in an all-Malaysian second-round clash later today. - FMT
