Hamzah clarifies Wawasan Negara's status, says it is a renamed party under takeover

Hamzah Zainudin has refuted claims that his new political outfit Parti Wawasan Negara is not registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

The Larut MP, who also leads the “Reset” movement, said the party had already been approved for registration before he took over and renamed it.

“I took over the party. Only the name was changed,” Hamzah (above) told reporters after attending a meeting with opposition MPs at the PAS headquarters in Kuala Lumpur last night.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz questioned if Wawasan Negara - which was just launched last week - is a “scam”, and if it was registered under the ROS.

His statement came after ROS director-general Zulfikar Ahmad reportedly said that the department has yet to receive any official application for the formation of a new political party using that name.

On Sunday, Free Malaysia Today reported that Parti Sedar Rakyat Sarawak claimed it had already approved amendments to change its name to Parti Wawasan Rakyat, noting that this could potentially conflict with Hamzah’s Wawasan Negara.

Sedar president Affendi Jeman also reportedly urged the ROS to address the matter, as the party had formally submitted its application to change its name on April 8.

On June 16, the ROS confirmed that it had received an application from Sedar to change its name, and that the vetting process is underway, Sinar Harian reported.

Last Saturday, Hamzah launched Wawasan Negara at the Reset Convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan. This came four months after he was sacked from Bersatu following a leadership crisis with its president, Muhyiddin Yassin.

Hamzah’s return as opposition leader

When asked about his status as opposition leader, Hamzah said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had previously made the announcement.

Hadi, when officiating the Reset Convention on June 13, said PAS had agreed to maintain Hamzah as opposition leader in Parliament, after taking into account the views of PAS and the MPs in Hamzah's Reset movement.

He added that the decision was not made by PAS alone, but after hearing the views of other MPs within the opposition bloc.

Prepping for Johor, N Sembilan polls

Commenting on the meeting with opposition MPs at PAS headquarters last night, Hamzah said it also discussed Perikatan Nasional preparations for the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, which will be held on July 11 and Aug 1, respectively.

He said each MP would assist candidates in both state polls.

“So colleagues, especially MPs, will go down to help our candidates; that is what we discussed,” he added.

Earlier, Hamzah and 16 other MPs from the Reset movement attended a meeting with PAS MPs that lasted nearly two hours.

Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid, when met by the media, said the opposition MPs’ meeting did not discuss the removal of Bersatu from PN.

Instead, Rosol said the meeting only covered preparations for the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting.

“We discussed the position of the opposition leader and the direction of the state elections. Everyone agreed that Hamzah remains opposition leader,” he said, adding that changes to parliamentary seating have not been discussed.

According to Parliament’s schedule, the Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament will run from June 22 to July 16. - Mkini
