National registration department rubbishes viral claims, saying not everyone at its counters is there to obtain a MyKad.

JPN said not everyone at the department’s counters is there to apply for or obtain a MyKad, and that it provides various registration and documentation services for foreigners as well.
It said this includes the birth of children, which must be registered with JPN regardless of their parents’ nationality. It added that registering a newborn’s birth does not automatically grant Malaysian citizenship.
“Pink birth certificates are proof that a birth was registered in Malaysia but they do not mean the child is Malaysian. This certificate is also issued to non-citizens.
“There are other services that JPN provides which involve foreigners, including civil marriages between foreign spouses.
“Therefore, do not jump to conclusions just because of a person’s presence at JPN without knowing their actual purpose for being there,” it said in a Facebook post.
Viral videos yesterday purportedly showed several Rohingya refugees at a JPN office, with an X user claiming they were there to get MyKads. - FMT
