PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang took a jab at Malaysiakini yesterday, prompting DAP vice-chairperson Syahredzan Johan to come to the portal's defence.
The clash is over perceptions of who the independent news portal supports.
Hadi (above, right), in the latest edition of his lengthy ”Minda Presiden” (the president's mind) write-up, dubbed Malaysiakini as one of the media outlets that supported DAP and helped propagate the party's “deviant teachings” (ajaran sesat) of secularism.
He then accused Malays in Pakatan Harapan of being silent against such deviancy, and even becoming spokespersons who defend DAP.
Responding to the PAS president, Syahredzan - who is the highest-ranking Malay DAP leader - urged Hadi to retract his remarks against Malaysiakini and to respect the media as the fourth estate.
"I'll be frank. I have also criticised Malaysiakini. Some of their reports to me do not meet journalism ethics and standards.
"However, I feel Hadi's attack this time is excessive. Accusing Malaysiakini of supporting DAP just because it gives space and coverage to the party is uncalled for.
"What's more, when you study it, Malaysiakini actually gives broad coverage to PAS too. Some say they have more coverage about the opposition than the government," he said in a Facebook post last night. - Mkini
