KUALA LUMPUR - The Barisan Nasional is now 'back in business," says Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"The leaders in the government have begun to mobilise. It is important that BN political leaders also move in tandem, even faster, as was done in the government transformation programme," said Muhyiddin, who is Barisan deputy chairman.
He said that Barisan had sprung back from the big challenge of the 2008 general election.
"Do not underestimate us because the BN is now back in business. We may have been rattled a little two years ago, but the BN is back in business.
"We want to serve the people. As such, we have introduced the New Economic Model, the Economic Transformation Programme .... All these are not for anyone else but the people of Malaysia," he said when opening the Gerakan national delegates conference here.
Muhyiddin said the BN had to rise with renewed vigour built on the comradeship of its components and the confidence in three main pillars inter-racial consensus, political stability, and the BN's capability to implement its social and economic responsibilities.
Muhyiddin also urged Barisan leaders to meet the people often and resolve their problems.
"I suggest that all BN component party leaders go down to the ground and see the situation for themselves, then find solutions to the people's problems, and take the appropriate measures to help them.
"This is to let the people know that the BN is the only party which continues to champion their interests and will ensure a better life for them," he said.
Muhyiddin said he and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is Barisan chairman, would also go to every state to ensure that all the problems faced by the people were resolved before the next general election.
"BN leaders are committed to what they want to do. We are determined to work to fulfil the needs of the people. This is the basis of what we do. I am happy that the initiative has begun, but there is a long way to go.
"We cannot take lightly what the opposition is doing. Problems which crop up which are linked to social, economic, political and educational matters will be resolved by us. I give the undertaking that we will strive together," he said.
Muhyiddin, who indicated that the next general election, due in 2013, would be held "soon", said the people would be the gauge for all the coalition's efforts and initiatives because they would determine whether the party would continue to be in power.
"It is important (to know) that we have only two more years (before the next general election). I am saying this not because I know when the elections will be. I do not know. The prime minister knows better.
"As politicians, we have to always remember that the people are the judge no matter how strong we are. What we have to determine is whether after five years the people will vote for the BN or not," he said.
Muhyiddin said that if any component party of the BN faced problems and was weak, it would have an impact on the whole coalition.
"If the Gerakan is unwell, I will be more unwell. If the Gerakan recovers, I will be in high spirits too," he said.
He said that though the BN won the two by-elections (in Galas, Kelantan, and Batu Sapi, Sabah) on Thursday, it should not rest on its laurels because much work remained to be done to ensure that the people continued to support the BN. - Star
