PUTRAJAYA: The issue of National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrower Safura Foo, who was blocked from travelling abroad although she had settled her loan, has come to the attention of the corporation.
In a statement to Bernama, PTPTN said it was still conducting further investigations into the matter.
“PTPTN is still in the process of identifying the cause of the delay in updating Foo’s payment record.”
Earlier, the media had reported that Foo, a former student of photography from Segi College, Subang Jaya, had made full payment on her outstanding loan amount of RM18,449.35 in March last year.
However, she was blocked by the Immigration at the KL International Airport in May this year, as records showed she had RM3,000 left to settle.
In the meantime, PTPTN has urged customers to check their account statements online to ensure that payments made are updated accordingly.
“If the transaction is not updated after three working days, a complaint can be made online.
“In addition, customers may also use this channel to file any PTPTN service-related complaints.
“Complaints submitted will be handled by officials at the PTPTN headquarters who will deal directly with the complainant until the problem or complaint is resolved,” the statement said.
In addition, PTPTN said it was committed to cutting red tape by opening more branches across the country and providing services online via its portal at www.ptptn.gov.my.

Warning over vaccines: Parents can be charged with neglect

Any person who neglects a child can be jailed up to 10 years or fined up to RM20,000 under the Child Act, warns women, family and community development ministry.

PUTRAJAYA: The reluctance of parents to have children vaccinated and immunised, causing an outbreak of infectious diseases which can endanger the latter’s health, can be deemed child neglect.
The women, family and community development ministry, in a statement , advised parents to follow the recommendations of the health ministry to ensure the good health of children.
Section 31 of the Child Act 2001 [Act 611] states that any person who neglects a child commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both.
According to the ministry, the Child Act 2001 was amended through the Child (Amendment) Bill 2015 and was approved in both the Dewan Rakyat on April 6 and the Senate on May 4.
“The Child (Amendment) Bill 2015 will be gazetted and enforced to increase the sentence for child neglect,” said the statement.

Selangor Sultan displeased mosques used for political purposes

He says the services of such “nazir” (guardians) should be terminated and the post given to others.
sultan-selangor
KLANG: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed displeasure at some “nazir” (guardians) for allowing mosques to be used for political purposes.
“Some politicians have used mosques in Selangor for political purposes.
“What is even more disappointing is that some of them are non-Muslims.
“The services of such ‘nazir’ should be terminated and the post given to others,” he said when opening Masjid Kampung Johan Setia, breaking of fast and presenting Aidilfitri contributions to the poor.
Sultan Sharafuddin has ordered the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to investigate and take stern action against those involved.
He also reminded Muslims in the state to pay their tithes through legitimate representatives appointed by the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS).
This was important to avoid individuals from taking advantage of the situation by collecting tithes from the public.
Sultan Sharafuddin also urged the people not to be influenced by comments disputing the authority of LZS disseminated through the social media.
Construction work on Masjid Kampung Johan Setia began in July 2012 and was completed in September 2015.
It was built on a 16-acre land at a cost of RM8.5 million and can accommodate some 2,000 worshipers at one time.
Sultan Sharafuddin also performed maghrib, isyak and tarawih prayers with the congregation.

Minister blasts WSJ for linking Guan Eng's arrest to 1MDB scandal

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak has taken aim at The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for supposedly giving the impression that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was arrested for his criticism of the 1MDB scandal.
Salleh took offence at WSJ's headline, titled: "Critic of Malaysia's Najib arrested on corruption charges."
"WSJ was actually reporting about Lim's arrest for corruption but the way they presented the headline, the impression they gave is that Lim was arrested for criticising rather than for corruption," he said in a blog posting this evening.
Salleh claimed WSJ then linked the arrest with 1MDB in the first paragraph of the report, saying: "A Malaysian opposition politician who has criticised Prime Minister Najib Razak’s handling of state investment fund 1MDB was charged with corruption in his role as chief minister of Penang state."
The report went on to state: "In May the Penang government froze 1MDB's purchase of 234 acres in the state until, Mr Lim said at the time, the fund manages its affairs with accountability and transparency."
Salleh said: "So, again, they insinuate or plant in the mind of the reader that Lim’s arrest is due to his criticism of the prime minister’s handling of 1MDB.
"The way WSJ presented their news report is as if the entire issue is about 1MDB and Najib and not because of the alleged corruption.
"And this is the news agency that the opposition says is to be believed, is very professional, has no hidden agenda, is not targeting Najib, and so on."
Salleh said this made it apparent that WSJ had an axe to grind with Najib.
"Even someone of limited intelligence can see that the WSJ... is engaged in a crusade against the prime minister and most likely against Malaysia as well.

"But then, there are many who still believe that the WSJ is just trying to reveal the truth and there is no mala fide involved," he said.
The WSJ in July last year broke the story about the RM2.6 billion in Najib's personal bank accounts.
Najib later claimed the money was a Arab donation and denied ever taking public funds for personal gain.

GUAN ENG'S MOM MAKES RARE APPEARANCE AS SON IS CHARGED: SHOULD PENANGITES FORGIVE UMNO LACKEYS MCA, GERAKAN?

GEORGE TOWN ― Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and businesswoman Phang Li Khoon were slapped with charges at the Sessions Court this morning over their allegedly corrupt house purchase deal last year.
A sombre-looking Lim garbed in a dark suit and red polka dot tie claimed trial to two charges, one under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act and another under the Penal Code.
He was first charged with using his public office or position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential purpose during a state exco meeting on July 18, 2014.
Section 23 carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000 whichever is higher.
The second charge was under Section 165 of the Penal Code, the same section used to convict former Selangor mentri besar Khir Toyo.
Kit Siang (right) enters the courthouse grounds holding on to his wife Neo and his daughter Hui Ying (in black).
Lim is alleged to have used his position to obtain gratification by purchasing his house from Phang at RM2.8 million, which was below the property’s market value of RM4.7 million on July 28, 2015.
The second offence is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of property upon conviction.
Gobind Singh Deo led the defence team for Lim while Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali led the prosecution team.
After the charges were read, Apandi asked for the case to be transferred to the Penang High Court and Sessions Court judge Roslan Hamid allowed the application and set the case for mention at the High Court.
Phang meanwhile was charged with abetting Lim on July 28 last year under Section 109 of the Penal Code.
On Apandi’s request, the businesswoman’s case was also transferred to the High Court.

FOR SURE, GUAN ENG WILL BE JAILED: 'NEW ROYALTY' NAJIB & ROSMAH TEST OUT THEIR 'UNLIMITED POWERS'

FOR SURE, GUAN ENG WILL BE JAILED: 'NEW ROYALTY' NAJIB & ROSMAH TEST OUT THEIR 'UNLIMITED POWERS'
steadyaku47 comment : Whatever the charges against Lim Guan Eng...whether they are outright lies, trumped up charges, or genuine...you can be assured that the powers that be.....namely this corrupt BN government ... have enough in their hands to put Lim Guan Eng away for a while...as they did with Anwar Ibrahim.
This is the reality of the times that we are now living in.
If Najib wants to put anyone away...Mahathir included....he can do so because all that he needs to make anything happen to Lim Guan Eng and anyone else, is within his capacity and ability to manage to the conclusion that he wants.
What is Lim Kit Siang, to do?
What is DAP to do?
What are we to do?
What ever that we do we must not forget our matalamat! We must win government at the next general election.
Kit Siang is wise enough to do the needful....let us take our cue from him.
Cina, Melayu and India...and everyone else on our side....listen to what the old man has to say and follow his orders to the letter. His loss is more than ours...that is his son that they have taken away....but he has gone through enough in his life to know what is the right thing to do.
Lawan mesti Lawan.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng surrounded by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers walking out of his office in Komtar on June 29, 2016.
GEORGE TOWN (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has issued a warrant for the arrest of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim is being investigated over allegations of corruption for the purchase of his RM2.8 million (S$938,000) bungalow on July 28 last year, according to the New Straits Times (NST).
His house purchase was also linked to the state's sale of state land in Taman Manggis to Kuala Lumpur International Dental Centre (KLIDC), the NST reported on Wednesday (June 29).
Penang Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin tweeted at about 5.50pm on Wednesday (June 29) that Lim would be taken to the MACC office soon.
"Arrest warrant has been issued to Chief Minister by MACC officers, he will be taken to MACC HQ anytime soon #penang," Dr Afif said.
DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang in a tweet said: "Guan Eng arrested by MACC on two charges of corruption and will be produced in court tomorrow morning."
Earlier, The Star Online reported that officers from MACC were at the Penang Chief Minister's office in Komtar while Lim was chairing a meeting of the state executive councillors.
At 4.55pm, five to eight officers arrived at Lim's office on Level 28. They entered a meeting room and waited inside.
It is learnt that the weekly state exco meeting was still going on at press time and there is a possibility that the officers are waiting to arrest Lim, who is DAP secretary general.
In a statement on May 25, the MACC said it has completed its probe into Lim's Pinhorn Road bungalow purchase and submitted the investigation papers to Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.
The MACC had also said appropriate legal action would be taken if the A-G was satisfied with the explanation given by the anti-graft body in its investigation papers.

EVEN WITH YOUR RM2.6BIL YOU CANNOT BREAK ME, NAJIB: GUAN ENG VOWS TO FIGHT OR 'DIE STANDING'

EVEN WITH YOUR RM2.6BIL YOU CANNOT BREAK ME, NAJIB: GUAN ENG VOWS TO FIGHT OR 'DIE STANDING'
The 2 charges against me under the Malaysian anti-corruption Commission Act (MACC) and Penal Code for corrupt practice is a clear act of political persecution motivated solely to destroy me as Penang Chief Minister. I had explained to MACC that the purchase of the bungalow from Ms Phang Li Koon is above-board, an arms-length transaction on a willing buyer and seller basis without any coercion or special favours granted from me or the state government.
Ms Phang is a friend of my wife and has no active business relationship with the state government. She is not a housing developer and the bungalow she sold me for RM2.8 million was built in the 1980s.
Khir Toyo's seller lost RM5mil, my seller made RM300K
There have been attempts to draw similarities between my case and former Selangor Menteri Besar, Mohd Khir Toyo. This is wrong. Unlike Khir Toyo’s case, Ms Phang did not make a loss of RM5 million but recorded a small profit of RM300,000-00 from her original purchase price of RM2.5 million. Unlike Khir Toyo’s case, Ms Phang is not a housing developer that has to be reliant on state government to continue her business.
What benefit did Miss Phang from state govt when MESB did not succeed in re-zoning its property
On the second charge relating to the approval of Magnificent Emblem Sdn. Bhd. (MESB)’s application to re-zone its land from agricultural to residential, MESB’s did not succeed in re-zoning its property to residential. The property is still remain an agricultural land. What benefit is there to MESB when it could not get its re-zoning approval to agricultural when it could not get final approval by Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang.
Also the hype on Taman Manggis fizzled out because there was nothing wrong
I am also puzzled by what started off as a vicious political attack on me selling out Taman Manggis land meant for the poor has came to nothing. Why all the hype about Taman Manggis land by BN Ministers then? Clearly there is nothing wrong with Taman Manggis land sale and instead I am charged for making a decision for MESB that finally did not gain them any benefit.
Yet Najib walks away with RM2.6bil 'donation', 1MDB with dubious debts of RM50bil
Sadly there is no corruption with huge RM50 billion debts or RM2.6 billion or RM4 billion in your personal bank accounts. But it is now corruption even when the alleged corrupt party did not gain any benefit.
I will not submit to such dirty and vicious political plays to destroy my reputation or Penang’s image as the cleanest and best-run state in Malaysia. We are proud of our open competitive tenders and proud of our accolades from Transparency International and the annual Auditor-General’s Reports. We will not allow BN to throw mud to hide its own corruption scandals. We will prove our innocence in court.
We will fight to prove that the Pakatan government is a people centric government that upholds its principles of integrity, justice, freedom and democracy. There is still hope for a Malaysia that is clean and free from corruption, abuse of power and oppression. We must not allow BN to steal our children’s future as they have stolen ours.
Conclusion
What type of country do we want our children to grow up when those who gained benefits and donations amounting to billions of ringgit are not charged for corruption whilst those who gained no benefit are prosecuted for corruption.
BN can prosecute me but will not kill my passion to free Malaysia from corruption.
BN can victimize me but will not crush my spirit to free Malaysia from those who steal our children's future.
BN can even humiliate me by unnecessary detaining me overnight but will not succeed in changing white to black and black to white, right cannot become wrong and wrong cannot become right.
BN will not break my party's unity - we stand together as leaders and members to battle for reforms towards a better Malaysia with freedom, justice and democracy.
If BN feels that they can bend or break me by arresting me, they are wrong! I will die standing than live on bended knees. A free Malaysia, a fair Malaysia, a prosperous Malaysia for all is worth fighting for!
LIM GUAN ENG IS PENANG CHIEF MINISTER, DAP SECRETARY-GENERAL
Bhd.
