Guan Eng’s political-secretary vows to quit if race abuse proven

Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary Ng Wei Aik, accused of telling an Indian-Muslim restaurateur to “balik India”, offered to quit his post today if it can be proven he made the alleged slur.

The Malaysian Indian-Muslim Congress (Kimma) had sent Ng a memorandum last Friday demanding a public apology over the alleged statement.

Ng, who is also Komtar state lawmaker, reportedly told an Indian-Muslim shop owner to “tutup kedai, balik India" (close up shop, go back to India) at Restoran Nasi Kandar Mohamad Aliyar here on January 2.

The alleged incident happened when the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) had gone to the restaurant and seized tables, chairs, television and other items at the premises for violating council rules.

Ng denied making such a statement and played a video recording to back his claim.

“It’s clear this is a lie... a malicious and wild accusation that I cannot accept,” he told a press conference here today.

“If there is proof that I said those words, I will immediately resign from my post as political secretary,” he added.

Ng said he would be sending a letter to Kimma asking them to apologise within the week or face further action.

Penang Kimma chief, Faruk Raja Mohamed, had previously told reporters he had proof Ng made the statement, when he delivered the memo to the Penang chief minister’s office last week.

“If he does not apologise by a week, we will not hesitate to take legal action. We also have strong evidence to show that he had actually uttered the words,” Farouk said, after leading some 100 Kimma members in a protest walk against Ng after Friday prayers from the Masjid Simpang Enam to Komtar. - Malaysian Insider
