Selangor gives Pakatan reps RM1m each as polls loom

The Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government has allocated RM1 million for constituency projects to each of its assemblyman ahead of a possible general election this year.

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives were excluded from the allocations because the BN federal government similarly discriminated against PR MPs.

“If Parliament allocates funds for all MPs, we will do the same,” Khalid told reporters today.

PR holds 35 seats in the 56-seat state assembly.

Today, Khalid also said he would focus on improving his administration in the next three months.

“We will go down to the field more often,” said Khalid after a state executive council meeting today.

“Each (PR) assemblyman is given RM1 million to improve roads and build bridges,” he added.

The Malaysian Insider reported today that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was considering holding snap polls only in the fourth quarter of this year to allow big-ticket economic projects to gain traction, delaying earlier plans to seek a fresh mandate in the first half of 2011.

Selangor’s move to win over voters comes after Najib’s meeting with BN lawmakers last weekend.

Umno officials and MPs involved in the meeting told The Malaysian Insider that the Umno president was now favouring elections only after projects like the construction of the city’s mass rapid transit (MRT) and Sungei Besi development have kicked off.

It is understood that during last weekend’s meeting, Najib had asked MPs to list the projects in their constituencies that had not taken off.

He also asked the MPs to inform him of campaign promises made in 2008 to voters which had not been fulfilled.

Officials familiar with what transpired at the discussions said Najib had told MPs he would help them ensure the 2008 campaign promises and projects would take off before calling for snap polls. - Malaysian Insider
