Balik Pulau member of parliament Yusmadi Yusof, anticipating election campaign abuse by Barisan Nasional, has urged the media and several other bodies to keep a close watch on prime minister Najib Razak's campaign trail in Sarawak.
Recalling Najib's now infamous phrase ‘You help me, I help you’, during his speech at the Sibu by-election campaign last year, Yusmadi warned that such gestures could be repeated.
"This incident is expected to be repeated judging from the ever intensifying contest in Sarawak,” he said.
Najib, at several recent by-elections, had drawn condemnations from Pakatan Rakyat leaders for blatantly telling voters that his government would only help their constituencies financially if the BN candidates won.
Yusmadi also urged the Election Commission and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to keep track of Najib, adding that PKR's machinery would be closely monitoring.
On Najib's decision to lead the Sarawak campaign, Yusmadi described the move as 'unprecedented and strange', saying it was the first time the country’s top leader was actively involved in a state election.
“Traditionally, the Deputy Prime Minister would lead the charge in state elections for Barisan Nasional. This shows that the Prime Minister is acknowledging Pakatan Rakyat’s inroads in its campaign for the tenth Sarawak state election,” he said.
