July 9: Perkasa announces four rally meeting points

NONE
Perkasa has confirmed four rally points for its July 9 assembly in Kuala Lumpur to counter a Bersih 2.0 rally seeking electoral reforms.

A leaflet, obtained by Malaysiakini from a petrol station, listed four rally points as the National Mosque, Dataran Merdeka, Stadium Merdeka and Istana Negara.

According to the leaflet without the publisher's details, urged "all Malays and peace-loving citizens" to gather at the four points to reject the Bersih 2.0 rally.

"(The Bersih 2.0 rally) is dirty and its agenda is to cause chaos in the country for the interest of certain quarters reported in this leaflet," read the document.

Participants are encouraged to gather at the four locations from 7am onwards for what is dubbed as the Gerak Aman rally.

"Your concern is very much appreciated. Mass participation would stop them from causing chaos in the country. They are sponsored by foreigners who are jealous of our country.

"They want to destroy Malay power which has managed to turn this country into a Islamic country. Make sure you will be able to join the 'Gerak Aman' event on July 9," it said.

Too close for comfort?

The four rally points for Gerak Aman would put Perkasa supporters within close proximity of the Bersih 2.0 three rally points which are the Sogo shopping centre, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Kampung Baru mosque.

City Hall is located just adjacent to Dataran Merdeka.

Bersih 2.0's rally intends to raise awareness on the dire need for reforms to the electoral system. The group intends to march to Istana Negara to submit a petition to the Agong on this issue.

The group, which is a coalition of more than 50 NGOs, believes that the current electoral system is unfair and subject to abuse, citing numerous reports on electoral fraud during the April 16 Sarawak state election.

This includes acting as the legal counsel to high profile case of Lina Joy who sought to be declared an apostate, organising forums which "attacked" Article 153 of the Federal Constitution and seeking to establish an Interfaith Commission, which was erroneously translated as a body which seeks equality in the leaflet. - Malaysiakini
