PUTRAJAYA, Sept 20 — The government does not know how to mislead Malaysians or manipulate historical fact, unlike the opposition, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was quoted by Bernama Online as saying today.
He also said that Barisan Nasional (BN) had always championed the importance of bringing progress to the nation and prosperity to its people.
However, certain opposition groups were trying to paint a different picture of the situation, he alleged.
He continued that the opposition’s constant emphasis on pledges made during the 2008 general election, which had yet to be fulfilled, was merely to buoy their political interests and agenda.
Najib said that in order to rectify any misconceptions that may arise, Umno and BN plan to explain the true situation to Malaysians at all levels of society by highlighting that the coalition and the party are ahead of the transformation curve.
He urged Malaysians not to think of Umno and BN as being devoid of new ideas and unaware of the challenges that they currently face.
Najib, who is also the president of Umno, speculated that it would be disastrous for the country should the opposition take over Putrajaya.
He accused the opposition of wanting to change certain long-held precedents, such as the nation’s history and the national flag, as they see fit, the national news agency reported.
The prime minister’s comments were part of an address to an Aidilfitri gathering of the Association of Former Members of the Social Welfare Development Department (PBAKM) at his official residence, Seri Perdana, today.
He ended by rallying the members of PBAKM, of which he is patron, to assist BN in defending Putrajaya, stating that Seri Perdana is the residence of Umno and a BN prime minister, and that the nation’s future is at stake, as the opposition cannot be relied upon to have its best interests at heart.
