PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has been asked to appear before Johor police over a speech he made at the party's national congress in the southern state late last month.
"We were not informed of the specifics, what speech, where and under what Act he is being investigated or his statement to be taken," Azmin's special officer Hilman Idham told Malaysiakini today.
Hilman confirmed that a police officer he believes is from the Johor police contingent headquarters contacted the Gombak parliamentarian by phone about 2.20pm today.
At the time, Azmin was at the airport, en route to Sarawak to oversee preparations for the PKR election machinery and attend the public hearing of the parliamentary select committee on electoral reform.
Azmin is also the opposition party's election director.
Hilman said while a date has yet to be fixed for Azmin to appear before the Johor police, they would have to send a team to interview him in Kuala Lumpur if they insisted that this be done very soon.
While no mention was made of which speech of Azmin's had got him into hot water with police this time, it is highly probable that it is related to the controversial ‘prison break' remark that the PKR deputy president made at the congress.
His aide did not confirm if this was the case.
"It is possible, but Azmin was not told the specifics on what matter it is about," Hilman said when asked about the possibility.
Speaking to PKR Youth at the movement's AGM prior to the convention proper, Azmin had said that they would "smash through prison walls" to free de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim should he be imprisoned again.
Azmin has said his speech should not be taken literally, for what he was referring to was a symbolic depiction of the walls of injustice that they would fight to free Anwar from, not breaking any prison wall.
However, Umno and government supporters have continued to lambast him for what they believe to be an inappropriate remark.
