Reconsider pricey toll for EDL

A business association wants the government to reconsider the proposal to implement a toll of RM9.10 to enter Singapore via the new expressway.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Indian Business Association (Miba) today urged the government to reconsider the proposed RM9.10 toll charge to enter Singapore via the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) Expressway.
The expressway is being constructed by the Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) and is expected to be completed in February next year.
The company, through its wholly owned MRCB Lingkaran Selatan Sdn Bhd (MLSSB), signed a 34-year-old concession with the government in June 2007 to build the EDL.
However, road users are aghast that such a pricey toll will be imposed for the eagerly awaited expressway.
Speaking to FMT, Miba president P Sivakumar said that it is improper to charge such a high rate as it will affect motorists who use the expessway on a daily basis.
The Johor-based businesman said Miba is not opposed to development projects that are beneficial for the people, but stressed that such projects should not be a burden.
“The wisest approach would be for the Cabinet to reduce the rate, which has yet to be confirmed,” he said.
According to him, some 60,000 Malaysian and Singaporean road users travel between the two countries on a daily basis.
“So, they have to spend an extra RM200 a month if the high toll is implemented,” he said.
“We urge the government to maintain the current road without a toll and to lower the rate for the EDL,” he added.
