Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali today said the statement of PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat to urge PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to retract his controversial statement on Israel, is just a “sandiwara” (gimmick) to confuse the people.
Nik Aziz’s statement, he said, was issued after PAS realised that it will suffer collateral damage from Anwar’s statement, which has drawn flak from local and foreign Islamic leaders.
“It is a sandiwara to clean PAS’ image from being seen as conspiring with Anwar who is clearly firm with his political support to the United States over the status of Palestine,” he told a press conference today in Kuala Lumpur.
Even if Anwar retracts his statement published in theWall Street Journal or takes legal action against the international publication, Ibrahim (right) said it could not vindicate Anwar.
“I’m not convinced that from the bottom of his heart or his attitude that he will really change his stand.
“He is a hypocrite. Today he makes a statement, tomorrow he can retract and the next day he can change it to confuse the people,” said Ibrahim.
The Independent MP for Pasir Mas challenged Nik Aziz to take the same stand against Anwar over other accusations faced by him such as those made by Umi Hafilda, Ezam Mohd Noor and KS Nallakarupan, to show PAS’ consistency.
“On the issues of religious pluralism, Lina Joy and inter-religious council which were said to be supported by Anwar, there was no reaction from Nik Aziz...,” he said.
Even the statement issued yesterday by Nik Aziz was quite late and purely out of political mileage, Ibrahim felt.
“It’s like after a patient has been sent to ICU, only then Nik Aziz wants to cure him,” he added.

Anwar had reportedly said in an interview with the Asian Wall Street Journal recently that he supported “all efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel”.
This prompted Nik Aziz to issue a hard-hitting statement yesterday, stressing PAS’ stand of not recognising the “illegal state” of Israel.
The Islamic party, he said, also rejected the resolution to allow two countries to coexist - one for Palestinians and another for Jews.
“I, as the spiritual leader of PAS, with the consent of all syura council members, urge Anwar to retract his statement as reported in the Wall Street Journal.
“If the statement was reported wrongly or carried a different meaning, I together with all syura council members advise Anwar to take legal action and sue the Wall Street Journal to clear his name,” he said.
