Group vows to gather at Lynas' doorsteps

The 'Occupy Balok-Gebeng 24 hours' event will culminate with participants gathering at the gates of the Lynas rare earth refinery, said event organisers Himpunan Hijau.

According to the latest flyer for the event, Himpunan Hijau will organise a 11km "convoy" from the Balok beach where the two day event is taking place to Gebeng, where the refinery is situated.

“The anger is now boiling over within the community. The people of Kuantan have decided that they will bring down Lynas no matter what,” said Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack in a press release today.

Contacted for further details, Wong said Himpunan Hijau would not be seeking permission from the authorities to hold the convoy.

"They should know what we are doing from the press reports," said Wong, in reference to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which nullifies the need for a police permit.

The convoy is schedule to begin at 10am next Sunday, serving as the climax of the two-day occupation of the beach.

"People can join the convoy in a car, motorcycle or even a bicycle. If not, you can always walk," said Wong.
Bigger turnout expected

He expects the turnout for the event to exceed that of the anti-Lynas on February 26 rally in Kuantan, which by Himpunan Hijau's estimates involved 20,000 people.

Wong said there has been many local groups and those from other states who have pledged their commitment to participate in the Occupy Balok-Gebeng event, which kicks off at noon next Saturday.

The event will include activities such as concerts, screening of the Euro 2012 tournament, games and the night will be capped off with a ceramah event, featuring opposition and civil society figures.

On whether the local authorities will allow the event to be held at Balok beach, Wong stressed that the beach is public property.

"The beach doesn't belong to the authorities, it belongs to the people," he said.
The Himpunan Hijau coalition is one of the most vocal of several groups opposing the Lynas plant.
It was also a key player in the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28, with Himpunan Hijau supporters making a significant portion of the estimated 100,000 people who took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur.
