PKR: Umno realised PTPTN siege would backfire

PKR said the BN government’s freeze on loans to two Selangor-run varsities was lifted only because Umno realised the move would backfire on their efforts to win back the state.

NONEPKR info chief Shuhaimi Shafiei (right) said this was evident in how Umno withdrew the loan the moment the Selangor government announced it would set aside RM30 million to aid the studentsstranded by the loan freeze.

Earlier, Umno had said the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loan would be reinstated if PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and PKR admit that they cannot provide free education.

“Just when that large sum of aid was announced, suddenly Umno set aside their ultimatum to Anwar Ibrahim and immediately withdrew the freeze.

“For sure Umno felt pressured and forced to back down without waiting for Anwar to admit anything.
"They had to swallow their foul spittle and phlegm, albeit through a straw,” quipped Shuhaimi.

He said had such an incident taken place in the rural regions, it would have had little political effect, but in an urban state like Selangor it would be disastrous for Umno.

“Where the majority of the Selangor residents are connected to the internet and the world of information without boundaries, the Selangor youth whose feelings have been hurt (by the loan freeze) have now come to know of the immature ways of Umno and BN who don’t deserve their votes.

NONE“Umno has made a mistake,” he said.

The loans were reinstated not out of concern for the burden of the students, but out of fear for the repercussions the move would have on the ballot box, he said.

“Because if the Selangor government succeeds in solving the students’ problems in totality, then Umno-BN’s dream of retaking the state is over, crushed and shattered.
"Just like the political career of the former dentist who once loved to go holidaying on the rakyat’s funds,” said Shuhaimi, taking a swipe at former Selangor MB Khir Toyo.

Repeating Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin’s critical comment calling the PTPTN move “bad politics”, the PKR leader reminded Umno that if they had an issue with PKR or Anwar, they were free to debate with them, but not get the students and their families caught in the crossfire.

“As many a leader with brains has said, Umno does not know the difference between governing and playing party politics,” he added.
