Burgermen: Selangor must take the rap for water problems

Pertubuhan Ikatan Usahawan Kecil dan Sederhana Malaysia (Ikhlas) wants the Selangor government to assume "full responsibility" in the event businesses in the state are affected by water rationing imposed by water concessionaires.

azlanIkhlas said this in a memorandum submitted to Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today, in which it gave the state a seven-day ultimatum.

The NGO demanded that the Selangor government issues a "letter of guarantee" to "assume responsibility over losses incurred" by business operators if Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) decides to cut off treated water supply.

"There are 34 water treatment plants in Selangor. According to the National Water Services Commission (Span), Selangor is entrusted to supply water to the people and businesses in the state and its surrounding areas, while Syabas is required to supply treated water to consumers in the state.

"Syabas says the distribution capacity of the 34 treatment plants is 4,371 million litres a day, but Khalid says that the water treatment plants can produce 4,807 million litres a day.

"We find the issue is being distorted as the rakyat, especially business operators, are the ones who will suffer," said Ikhlas president Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah.
He NONEblamed Khalid for "dragging" the people of Selangor "into the mess started by the state".

If Syabas decides to impose water rationing in the state, Mohd Ridzuan (right) said, businesses in the state, especially in the Klang Valley, would suffer the most.

"The state should stop blaming the federal government, which means well for the people and intends to resolve the crisis," he added.

If the state does not respond in seven days, Mohd Ridzuan warned, Ikhlas would hold a "massive demonstration" at the state secretariat building.

Treated water supply in the state is managed by four companies - Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Puncak Niaga Sdn Bhd (PNSB), Syarikat Pengeluaran Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) and Konsortium ABASS.

Last month Syabas, the main water concessionaire, proposed water rationing for certain parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Federal government steps in

It said there was a shortage of treated water because the demand exceeded the production capacity of its water treatment plants, causing disruptions and low water pressure.

azlanThe proposal drew fierce criticism from the Pakatan Rakyat-led government, which claimed that the dams were full to the brim and accused the company of"manufacturing"the crisis.

The Selangor government theninvoked its powersunder the highly-confidential concession agreement to step into the company.
However, this move was blocked by the federal government, which said such action by Selangor was not necessary at the present.

Mohd Ridzuan skirted questions put to him on Syabas' water rationing proposal and again attacked the state government for not dealing with the problem decisively.

"Stop the drama. We have the facts. Stop politicising the issue and spinning it out of context," he said and urged the people to vote against the Pakatan government.
