Chua: Anwar was the first to reject RCI

MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek says PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was the first person to reject the formation of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate issues arising from the influx of illegal immigrants into Sabah.

NONESabah-based English dailyBorneo Post quotes Chua as telling reporters in Kota Kinabalu yesterday that Anwar, when he was the deputy prime minister, opposed the RCI proposal raised by Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) in 1994.

"I would also like to alert Sabahans that they should not be conned by Anwar. The first political party to officially campaign for the RCI was PBS and its president Pairin (Kitingan) and the first time he raised it was in 1994.

"At that time Anwar was deputy prime minister and he was the first to reject it.

"We want to remind Sabahans that today he is singing a different tune, so we guess Anwar is hoping that the people may have forgotten, but people like Chua Soi Lek can remember," Chua said after officiating Sabah MCA's annual delegates conference yesterday.
'RCI a pollitical gimmick of the BN'
English daily The Star quoted Chua as saying that DAP had condemned Anwar when he was in power for 17 years, but the party was now praising the opposition leader.

"Maybe, DAP has some sort of a cleansing machine in its office," he added.

Anwar, who was also in the Sabah capital yesterday, told reporters that the RCI was just a political gimmick of BN to face the general election.

NONEMalay daily Berita Harian today quotes Anwar as saying that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak decided to form the RCI only after mounting pressure from various quarters.

He said the RCI should not only cover Sabah but apply nationwide because many immigrants in Sabah have been transferred to Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor.

"We worry while waiting for the RCI's investigation to be concluded, they (immigrants) will be transferred out and later brought back again when everything is done," Anwar is quoted as saying.

After several delays, Najib announced last Saturday that the RCI would be implemented and that it would be headed by the former chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Steve Shim.

The other commission members are former Universiti Malaysia Sabah vice-chancellor Kamaruzaman Ampon, former Sabah attorney-general Herman Luping, former Sabah state secretary KY Mustafa and former Kuala Lumpur police chief Hendry Chin.

The RCI has been given a wide-ranging terms of reference, including investigating whether immigrants were legally issued identity cards and whether they were legally registered as voters.
