MCA: Nizar’s Jalur Gemilang tweet akin to treason

The party further contends that Pakatan Rakyat has no respect for the nation and its national flag.
UPDATED
PETALING JAYA: MCA central committee member and publicity bureau chairman Loh Seng Kok described PAS central committee member Nizar Jamaluddin’s tweet about the national flag as akin to treason.
“It is akin to treason what a PAS national leader has done in insulting the national flag,” said Loh in a press statement in response to a tweet from Bukit Gantang MP Nizar, who is also Pasir Panjang state rep.
On Sunday, the PAS lawmaker twittered: ‘Janji Ditepati’ Malang perayaan kemerdekaan tahun ini di buat oleh kabinet BN, luntur semangat nak kibarkan jalur gemilang, jalur malang!
Translated it means, ‘Promises Fulfilled’ unfortunate that Merdeka celebration this year is organised by the BN cabinet, no mood to wave Jalur Gemilang, the unlucky stripes.
MCA Youth deputy chief Mah Hang Soon meanwhile claimed that Pakatan Rakyat does not respect Malaysia or appreciate the independence that it achieved.
“Even in fully developed democracies, it is widely accepted that the national flag should never be dishonoured – especially by lawmakers whose role is to uphold the values of the country.
“Nizar’s careless comment not only demonstrates Pakatan’s lack of tact, it (also) reveals a deeper issue at hand – the opposition’s lack of true respect for the nation and what is independence,” said Mah in his press statement.
Mah, who is also Perak state exco for health, local government and environment and Chenderiang state rep, further claimed that this was not the first instance when Pakatan lawmakers insulted the national flag.
He reminded the public that DAP’s Kota Alam Shah state rep M Manoharan had suggested Jalur Gemilang to be modified last year to suit the DAP flag in his Facebook status.
He also claimed that another DAP elected rep had disrespectfully flown the national flag upside down and tattered at his service centre.
Manoharan last year had claimed that the Jalur Gemilang looked more like a BN flag than a Malaysian flag.
Loh also lashed out at Pakatan for having their own Merdeka theme, stating that their action was meant to confuse the public.
“Their tactics in doing so is only meant to spread confusion, and this directly insults the contributions made by our nation’s founders,” said Loh.
Pakatan had announced that it would celebrate the independence day using a different theme, ‘Sebangsa, Senegara, Sejiwa’ (One Race, One Nation, One Soul), instead of ‘Janji Ditepati’.
Nizar meanwhile disputed that his actions were akin to treason and said that the MCA had misunderstood his Twitter message.
“It is Umno and BN that committed treason. They defiled, belittled and ridiculed the national flag.
“They are the ones who put a political tag campaign, Janji Ditepati, to the Jalur Gemilang,” said Nizar.
Umno has been using the Janji Ditepati or Promises Fulfilled tagline in a nationwide campaign to reach out to the masses.
He added that in this context, it is unfortunate for the national flag to be used as a political tool for Umno and BN
