In Sabah, a Christian pastor helps PAS get ready for polls
A Christian pastor is among several activists who have been helping PAS to gain a foothold in a town in Sabah in time for the next general election.
Francis Singoron is mobilising support to ensure victory for the Islamic party which is expected to field its candidate in Pitas, a state constituency and a town in Kudat on the northern part of Sabah.
Francis is helped by fellow Christians, Ondon Mangajil and Rakilin Mahuda @ Melvin, two of his comrades in PAS Supporters' Wing, the party's non-Muslim wing.
Some 60 percent of the voters in Pitas are Muslim, while the remaining are made up of the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut communities, who are largely Christian.
For Francis, he decided to throw his support behind PAS after being convinced that the party never sidelined the non-Muslims and embraced a policy of peaceful co-existence among adherents of various religions.
His view is echoed by Melvin.
"My friends from PAS, from the top to the bottom ranks of the party, treat me as equal," said Melvin, a resident of Selangor who decided to return to his home state to help PAS with pre-election works.
As for Ondon, the role played by top PAS duo Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang in explaining the party's stance on such issues as the 'Allah' controversy was something praiseworthy.
Social activist Dausieh Queck, who joined PAS last year, has been speculated to represent PAS in Pitas. Dausieh is an active member of Sabah-based Muslim women's NGO, Persatuan Persaudaraan Muslimah Malaysia, or SALIMAH.
Francis, Ondon, Melvin and Dausieh have been busy wooing support among the electorate, visiting villages and communities.
Readers who would like to help the PAS campaign may make financial contributions to Kudat PAS's bank account (1690020154073 - Ambank Islamic).
