Show your 'abhorrence' to corruption AT HOME, Najib told
Prime minister Najib Razak contributed RM1 million to the Vienna-based International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) but over at home, he has been doing the exact opposite by dismissing revelations of mass-scale corruption involving Sarawak chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud and others.
Veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang contrasted Najib's rubbishing of the allegations surrounding Taib with his speech on fighting corruption during the opening of the annual conference International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities yesterday.
Among others, Najib called for the instilling of a “natural abhorrence of corruption into the very conscience of society” as an alternative method in the fight against corruption.
"If Najib has a 'natural abhorrence' of corruption, he would not have demolished the credibility, integrity, professionalism and independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) just two weeks ago when he summarily dismissed allegations that Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had amassed billions in wealth with the public response: 'There are all kinds of allegations, jangan kita layan' (don't bother)," rejoined Lim.
He was referring to the recently released report by Swiss-based NGO Bruno Manser Fund, which estimated the Taib family's total assets to be worth US$21 billion (RM64 billion), with a personal wealth of US$15 billion (RM46 billion), making him Malaysia’s richest man.
Lim also reminded the allegations of corruption and power abuse surrounding Sabah chief minister Musa Aman and attorney general Abdul Gani Patail, adding that their cases would test Malaysia's commitment to combatting "Grand Corruption by VVIPs".
"Would Najib demonstrate his 'natural abhorrence' of corruption by appearing in person in Parliament to report on the 'test of the trio' in the war against Grand Corruption – Taib Mahmud, Musa Aman and Gani Patail – and submit updates of inquiries into allegations of corruption and abuses of power against the trio?" asked Lim.
