1 week to go, Kamilia kick-starts GE campaign

With just one week left to polling day, former Umno Wanita deputy chief Kamilia Ibrahim has finally shifted her campaign machinery into gear as she contests as an Independent for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat.

NONEHowever, her campaign team, comprising all her children, has only 12 core members and is dwarfed by that of her opponents Umno and PAS.

Addressing tens of supporters at a hotel in Kuala Kangsar today, she said that her campaign team was led by her eldest son, while there rest is made up of her sons and daughter.

“I have six sons and one son-in-law as well, they will all chip-in,” she said.

She explained the “triggering factor” that made her choose to contest as an Independent is because she finds that women in Umno is not being recognised.

She said despite being the number-two person in Umno Wanita, she was not not fielded as the Kuala Kangsar candidate.

In BN, she cited MCA vice-president Ng Yen Yen (left) as another woman who was not fielded as a candidate in this general election.

The former Kuala Kangsar Umno Wanita chief will campaign with her own four-wheel drive vehicle, along with cars owned by her children, so as to travel around the constituency.

With leaflets and banners featuring her portfolio and manifesto prepared, Kamilia is eyeing to capture the Umno stronghold with her book logo.

Five-point manifesto

Her manifesto, dubbed “Kamilia is with you for Kuala Kangsar”, lists the five things she wants to bring to the people in Kuala Selangor.

Should she be elected as MP, she said she wants to uphold the rights and dignity of women through policy-making and hopes to enact laws in parliament.

NONEShe also wants to upgrade the living standard of the people there and fight for a specialist hospital to be built in Kuala Kangsar.

“I will fight to strengthen the Islamic system which is stated in the federal constitution,” she said.

Last but not least, she also wishes to develop the economy of Kuala Kangsar, and vow to “eliminate corruption and cronies”.

Speaking to the press later, Kamilia stressed that she won’t return to Umno even if she wins in Kuala Kangsar.

According to the Umno constitution, she explained that the party does not allow anyone to become a member if one contests under the Independent ticket.

“I will maintain as an Independent and will propose my ideas to parliament,” she added.

Kamilia had been immediately sacked from Umno after she successfully nominated herself as an Independent candidate for theKuala Kangsar parliamentary seat.

NONEShe will contest in a three-cornered fight, facing BN candidate Wan Mohamad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad and PAS’ Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah.

Yesterday, during a visit there, BN chief Najib Abdul Razak told the people of Kuala Kangsar that those who had left Umno will beabandoned by the people.

However, Kamilia today refused to comment on the caretaker PM’s words, stating instead, “Najib has his right to comment anything he wants”.
