An Independent in Putrajaya?

Speculation is rife that a top Cuepacs official would contest in the federal administrative centre's parliamentary seat
PETALING JAYA: A top official from the Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), the biggest civil sector umbrella union, is set to contest the Putrajaya parliamentary seat, the smallest parliamentary constituency in the country.
If the speculation turns to reality then the seat, which houses the federal administrative centre, would witness a three cornered fight between incumbent Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor of the Barisan Nasional (BN), a PAS candidate who is yet to be announced and an independent.
“We have decided to field a top level leader as an independent candidate,” a Cuepacs source told FMT when contacted.
The umbrella union, the source said, decided to contest the Putrajaya seat because of the incumbent member of parliament’s poor performance.
“The incumbent MP has overlooked the plight of civil servants in the constituency. We are also upset that he seldom visits us.
“We have various problems such as housing and cost of living which he failed to sort-out. We decided to challenge the incumbent to show our disappointment against him,” said the source.
He said Cuepacs has a better chance of winning the seat because of the huge number of civil servants who are registered voters in Putrajaya.
It must be noted that Cuepacs is the umbrella union for about 1.2million public servants in the country.
Putrajaya is a BN strong hold held by Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary general.
Tengku Adnan has been announced as the BN candidate for the seat. Speculation is that PAS vice president Husam Musa would be nominated by Pakatan Rakyat, the opposition pact made up of PAS, PKR and DAP, to fight the seat.
Husam Musa, the Salor, Kelantan state seat incumbent, is said to be keen to contest the Putrajaya seat. The PAS top leadership has yet to give him the green light to contest the constituency.
In 2008, Tengku Adnan  defeated PAS candidate Mohamed Noor Mohamed with majority of 2,734 votes. Putrajaya is the smallest parliamentary constituency in Malaysia, with only about 6,700 registered voters.
