PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has given recalcitrant party members who registered to stand as Independent candidates in the coming general election until 5pm Thursday, April 25, to withdraw or face the sack.
"This coming general election will see the most multi-cornered fights in the history of our nation. That Umno has sacked 61 members over this issue shows the deep fissures in Umno and BN. Fortunately, Keadilan has fewer in number," Azizah told a press conference on Wednesday.
"This action of turning against the party leadership and putting oneself first cannot be accepted. Despite this, our disciplinary committee is still appealing and trying to sort out these issues with those involved. I am appealing to these 20-odd members to issue their withdrawal. The coming election is a battle for the future of the country and goes beyond individual glory and ego."
Off the 20, "one or two" are branch leaders while the rest are ordinary members, according to Zulkifli, a member of the PKR disciplinary committee, who was also at the press conference.
The 'recalcitrants' have to write in to the PKR disciplinary committee to confirm that they will withdraw from going through with contesting the respective seats on May 5. "They have until 5pm tomorrow. After that they will be automatically dismissed," said Zulkifli,
"Any member involved in canvassing for the Independents will also be sacked," chipped in PKR vice president Tian Chua, who was also present.
