KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — Bukit Aman has directed all state police contingents to increase security at Election 2013 campaign rallies nationwide after a homemade bomb was set off at a Barisan Nasional (BN) ceramah last night.
“We will increase security before and during a ceramah, which is why we ask all political parties to inform us of their ceramah,” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said in Ipoh today.
“I want to assure the public that we have everything under control and are using all elements within the police force to apprehend the culprit.”
A party worker was injured when a mysterious explosion occurred behind the main tent of a BN rally in Penang last night.
The 10.15pm explosion came from a pile of garbage located behind the main stage when Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan was delivering his speech.
The injured man was part of BN Nibong Tebal candidate Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman’s escort team.
He suffered a cut to his leg after being hit by shrapnel from the blast.
Ismail said today initial investigations had revealed that the explosion was caused by a “homemade explosive”.
“Only one victim sustained minor injuries, but the explosive was made to harm and possibly kill,” he said.
In a separate incident, a BN operations room in Sekinchan here nearly caught fire this morning after a petrol bomb was thrown in its direction.
