COUNT ME OUT, SAYS CHONG

KOTA KINABALU: Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, 65, dismissed talk making the rounds that he is going to contest in Kudat, his traditional stronghold, under an opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) ticket.

"It is not true. I am out of active politics," he said when contacted, Saturday.
Speculation was rife about Chong making a comeback to politics ever since he was visited by a DAP delegation led by Lim Kit Siang at his residence where they had lunch together.

It became more intense following the dissolution of the 12th Malaysian Parliament last Wednesday (April 3).

He was elected Kudat Assemblyman in the March 1981 State Election and served as Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister during the Berjaya era.

The former President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) became the 13th Chief Minister of Sabah in 2001 under a rotation system mooted by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In April 2007, Chong resigned from the Deputy Chief Minister post, citing matters of principle over the rejection by the State Government to erecting the Mazu (Goddess of the Sea) statue at its original site.(DE)
