Judge chides UPSI student Adam Adli for being disrespectful to leaders

KUALA LUMPUR: A High Court judge has chided Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student Adam Adli Abd Halim(pix), who took down a flag with the Prime Minister's face, for being disrespectful to the nation's leaders.
Justice Zaleha Yusof, in dismissing a judicial review application by Adam Adli, said UPSI's rule was not in contradiction with Section 16(b) of the Universities and University Colleges Act.
She said there was no mala fide in the decision made by the university's disciplinary appeal committee.
"Leaders should be respected regardless of their political stand.
"As youngsters, we have to respect leaders and this is our culture," she said on Friday.
Adam Adli was seeking to review his suspension by the university for breaking its regulations.
Zaleha noted that Adam Adli's action had gained wide coverage and definitely tarnished the respondent's name. She did not make any order as to cost.
On Dec 17, 2011, Adam Adli made headlines for bringing down a flag bearing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's image outside the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Instead, he raised a flag of Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia.
Adam Adli, a fifth semester student in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), filed the application on Apr 17, last year naming UPSI, its disciplinary appeal committee and the government as respondents.
In his application, Adam Adli, 23, wanted the court to quash the decision by the appeal committee on March 8 which dismissed his appeal against his suspension.
Adam Adli said on Jan 9, the university's disciplinary committee had instructed a three-semester suspension against him which would end September, this year.
He said he was found guilty by the committee for tarnishing UPSI's name and disturbing public peace and safety.
His application further stated that he made an appeal on Feb 2 but claimed that he was not given a chance to be heard before the appeal committee made the decision. - Star
