MCA likely to drop Tee Keat and Ping Sieu

MCA is unlikely to field two of its best known personalities - former president Ong Tee Keat and vice-president Gan Ping Sieu - in the coming general election.

Another vice-president, Dr Ng Yen Yen, has confirmed that she would not be fielded as well.

MCA's decision to cull Ong and Gan was informed by an MCA headquarters official late this afternoon to the Chinese news organisations who are preparing for their evening editions.

An official list has yet to be issued by the party headquarters. The party has been informed on BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak's choice of candidates this morning.
In another development, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has confirmed that the party would contest in 37 parliamentary seats and 90 state.
This means that MCA is contesting three less parliamentary seats compared to 2008. The three seats are Gelang Patah, Kuantan and Wangsu Maju
'Wait for re-delineation'
Chua said that these MCA seats will be "loaned" to BN component parties to ensure BN's victory.

"After the electoral boundaries are re-delineated, new seats will be given to MCA and the number of seats for us will increase," said Chua in a press release.
He said there he understood the disgruntlement among some party members over this arrangment and hoped they would put the party's interest first.
"This is a battle of life and death. Our comrades should put aside their differences and ensure that our candidates win, because this affects MCA's political future," he said.
Chua added that of the 37 candidates for Parliament, 19 (51.3 percent) are new faces of which five (13.5 percent) of which are women.

As for state assembly seats, 49 out of 90 candidates (54.4 percent) are new faces.
Yen Yen happy
Met at the MCA headquarters today, Ng told reporters that she had already informed the party leadership that she does not want to defend her seat.

"I feel very relaxed. I can now continue with my life," she said.

She said that she will still continue with her party duties and help MCA candidates with their campaign.
