TOO LITTLE TOO LATE! More new faces for GE13 - Najib

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE! More new faces for GE13 - Najib
KUALA LUMPUR - The Barisan Nasional line-up of candidates in the coming general election will see many changes as its chairman Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has announced that as many as 40% of its candidates are fresh faces.
In a packed press conference here today (Monday), Najib said the changes to its candidates are in line with the wishes of the people.
"In this finalised list, we have taken into account the sentiments and expectations of the people to see a BN and UMNO that is ready for change, and renewal," he said.
He said there will be 33% new faces fielded in Parliamentary seats, and 49% in the state seats.
However, in a move to seemingly placate some veterans who are likely not to be fielded, Najib called on them not to be disappointed.
"Those who are not selected as candidates... It does not mean they have failed, or are problematic.
"But in this situation where the people demand change, some among us must give way to others. However, this does not mean the government has denied their contribution and services throughout the years," he said.
However, he said the line-up needs to take into consideration the need for experienced lawmakers and administrators.
"A balance between new and experienced representatives are important, not only because we need to present renewal but also because we need those who have the ability to govern," he said, adding that an entirely new line-up would merely stunt the abilities of the BN government.
"I hope that any scrutiny on our lineup would be done in an overall context of the ability of these candidates to form a strong and steady government," he said.
Najib also said there will be a fair representation of women and youth candidates, but declined to say how many.
He is expected to announce the list of candidates from Umno tomorrow.
Meanwhile, BN party component leaders when approached after the press conference were tight-lipped about the candidate breakdown.
Wanita BN chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said she was "satisfied with the process of selection", but whether she is satisfied with the number of candidates, she was evasive.
"All I can say is I am satisfied with the process... All the names I have given to the chairman (Najib) are names selected from the grassroots and I am happy that he has given me to opportunity to discuss them all thoroughly," she said.
MIC president G. Palanivel also remained mum, saying that he "needs to go through the list carefully and discuss it" before making any announcements.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said he will be announcing the candidates from his party later this evening (Monday) after analysing it, adding that it does not matter which component party the candidates are from, as the objective was to win the elections.
Gerakan president Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon said he is happy with the list in context of the BN spirit, as each component party is represented.
BN Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said he was "satisfied" with the number of youth candidates chosen to contest this election, and said he will reveal the list tomorrow.
