An online petition has begun to gather signatures in protest against an advertising agency linked to The Star’s executive chairman Vincent Lee for the fear tactics in the MCA and Barisan Nasional’s general election advertising (see » The Power of the Keris).
The campaign’s full-page attack ads have linked the alliance of the MCA’s arch-rival DAP and PAS to the Chinese community’s fears about hudud and the imposition of syariah, the Islamic legal system.
The Star has been running DAP-bashing full-page ads every day since the campaign started. The first of these said “A vote for DAP is a vote for PAS”.
The trade magazine Campaign Asia-Pacific, in a report yesterday, named Rapp Kuala Lumpur as the agency behind the campaign, and linked it to Vincent Lee, the MCA, and the Star.
Rapp is part of the Foetus Group, which has Vincent Lee as group executive chairman; the group includes Naga DDB, the agency founded by Vincent which is now part of the DDB worldwide network, one of three international networks owned by the global advertising holding company Omnicom.
Campaign correspondent Racheal Lee said in her report that “an advertising industry leader in Malaysia has noted with rueful amusement that most of the nation's production houses are tied up with work for the coming election, making it hard to get regular advertising work done”.
The online petition, which quotes Masjaliza Hamzah of Centre for Independent Journalism, was started yesterday afternoon and has gathered more than 700 signatures to date.

Campaign also put together a slideshow of 18 advertisements in the current election campaign, which feature most of the DAP-bashing anti-PAS ads. The slideshow also includes these:
Campaign Asia Pacific is a title of the Haymarket group based in Australia. The petition was also begun in Australia, by Kevin Bathman of Sydney.
