I am sorry, says Waythamoorthy

P Waythamoorthy, who recently resigned as deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department, has issued an apology to "the Indian poor" for failing to roll out the socio-economic programmes he promised.

The Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) chief said this was especially for Indians who voted for BN based on his promised programmes listed in PHM's memorandum of understanding with the government.

Waythamoorthy said that it was due to this that the BN government won in the 13th general election, even if narrowly.

"I take full ownership for this failure to deliver on our pledges.

"For the last eight months, I had tried patiently to work with the PM to rollout the programmes agreed to in the agreement, but we have not been able to move even one of the items in the agreement.

"I make no excuses for our failure; I take full ownership for the failure and its consequences," Waythamoorthy said in a statement, breaking his silence after his resignation as a senator and deputy minister.

He added that PHM will continue to strive for "fairness, equality, justice and dignity" for the Indian poor and hopes that they will accept his apology.

Waythamoorthy said that he had signed the agreement with the BN "in sincere and earnest hope" that it could change the lives of poor Indians.

He said that by being in the administration, he would be able to make the "ruling class" understand the problems faced by this community so that a real solution can be meted out.

He added that he believed this could be done by having the prime minister publicly agree to the programmes.

"At that time we thought we would be able to carry out the various socio economic programmes as we will be mandated to carry out those programmes our self with the necessary budget and unit," he said.

Ticked off before

Waythamoorthy resigned without much fanfare on Feb 10.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Feb 14 said that the resignation was "disheartening" but it will not stop the government from implementing socio-economic programmes for all races, including the Indians.

PHM is a splinter faction of the Hindraf movement, which had the controversially signed the MOU with the BN prior to the 13th general election.

He urged Indians to vote for BN after the MOU was signed, and was appointed as deputy minister and as senator after the election.

However, his vocal championing of causes such as deaths in custody had prompted calls from BN ministers such as Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, and Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, for him to resign.

Najib himself had ticked off Waythamoorthy for not toeing the government line before.
