Perkasa denies member involved in assault

Perkasa has denied that its members had been involved in assaulting a district office staff during an illegal hawker operations in Teluk Bahang.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said his NGO does not condone any acts of violence and strongly condemned such incidences, adding that he does not personally encourages such culture.

"There are a lot of opportunistic people who do bad things while others get the blame," he said in a press conference after speaking to 100 Perkasa members in Penang.

Ibrahim noted that despite the differences in opinion, there was no need to go down the violent road.

"We have yet to go down to the ground in big numbers as a show of force like Bersih," he added.

He denied that the NGO's state youth chief, Rizuad Azudin (right in photo), who was on the scene at Teluk Bahang when the scuffle happened between several ordinary citizens and enforcement officers from the District Office, the Penang Municipal Council, and the police.

"I have asked him... Rizuad was there to stop the fight, and disperse the crowd," Ibrahim told reporters after his speech in Penang, when asked about the incident.

"He was the one who saved the assistant district officer (ADO). Just because he is a Perkasa member, he is accused of being involved. I checked with other members and confirmed that he was not involved," Ibrahim added.

In the Jan 21 incident, assistant district officer Abu Hassan Omar was roughed up and his shirt torn infront of 35 policemen.

According to then Southwest District police chief Supt Mohd Hatta Mohd Zin, those present at the event included the Teluk Bahang Hawkers Action Group led by Rizal Zainal Abidin, members of Pekida and Persatuan Mukabuku Pulau Pinang, Rizuad, and Teluk Bahang Umno chief Mohd Radzi Embee.

Support action against law-breakers

The incident prompted Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to hold an emergency meeting over safety and security issues in Penang.

"I have warned my members that if any of them acted against the law without any reservations, I strongly support the police in taking action against them, regardless of who they are," Ibrahim said.

"If police take action, it is against the individual and not Perkasa," the former Pasir Mas MP noted.

Perkasa members are strong defenders of Malay rights and is the most vocal group against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Ibrahim expressed caution that there were "opportunists" who were out to take advantage of the situation to undermine the NGO's image.

"Don't blame the NGO for everything. There may be one or two errant members - whom I don't know - who will act in their own way, so let the process of the law take its place," Ibrahim added.
