Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nancy Shukri has taken to micro-blogging site, Twitter, to defend herself over her statement that Datuk Ibrahim Ali's threat to burn Malay Bibles was in defence of Islam, telling critics to check their facts before attacking her.
Tweeting to various people since Thursday night, Nancy blamed The Malaysian Insider for misrepresenting her statement, adding that the news portal was "happy" people believed she was defending the Perkasa chief's Bible-burning call.
She said that she had never defended Ibrahim's threat to burn Bibles, and was not in a position to do so.
"My grandma was a non Muslim, you think I would do such a thing? Wake up," she tweeted to a user by the handle @ET_World96.
In a tweet to @timothydavid5, she said: "Better understand the message. Don't jump the gun. Msian Insider is happy with you."
The de facto law minister told @DanielYahya1978 that she was considering suing The Malaysian Insider over the article after he asked her why she was not taking the news portal to court.
Nancy also took aim at Global Movement of Moderates CEO Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and told the former Umno deputy minister to find out the facts before issuing any comments.
"@saifuddinabd Before you make your comments, you better find out the facts first. You have all the means to find out," she said.
She was referring to Saifuddin's statement on Thursday in which he said her arguments did not reflect the true teachings of Islam and could not be used to justify Ibrahim's statement.
However, Saifuddin replied to her tweet, saying: "@NancyShukri 1) I read ur text. 2) I was informed by d senior journalist u spoke to (a Dato Seri). 3) I read ur full statemnt ystrday."
Nancy had said in her parliamentary written reply on Tuesday that police decided not to act against Ibrahim over his call last year to burn Malay Bibles because he was merely defending Islam.
In the reply to Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng, Nancy said the police concluded Ibrahim's words were only directed at specific individuals, and were not a threat to the larger society.
Saifuddin said on Thursday that Islam did not teach Muslims to insult other faiths, adding that her statement could spread misconceptions over the religion.
Since her statement was released, Twitter users have attacked Nancy for defending the Perkasa president over his controversial threat.
@ET_WORLD96 said: "wat theory is tht? Thn any1 also can burn others ppl things to defend their religious? Use the brain."
@Zaneher tweeted: "The height of stupidity! How can you allow yourself to... @NancyShukri you r seditious person."
Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang said: "Just can't believe a Minister would claim nothing wrong with threat to burn Bible with the word Allah cause merely defending Islam."
Nancy replied to each tweet, repeating that they had gotten their facts wrong and she had spoken on behalf of government agencies and not in her personal capacity.
Yesterday, former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said Nancy could not be entirely blamed for the statement, adding that he suspected the police and Attorney-General had passed the buck to her to face the public's ire.
"Knowing a little bit about how our Cabinet works, I suspect Nancy did not prepare the statement, but was told to use it since she is the person in charge of matters of law in the Prime Minister’s Department," he said in his blog.
He added that perhaps Nancy felt appearing ridiculous and compromising her credibility as a lawyer was not too high a price to pay to remain a minister.
