Don't just punish non-Malays for calling Malays 'pendatang': Application of law must be equal - Guan Eng

BATU KAWAN - Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has urged for equal application of the law on those who raise issues of ethnic origin.
He said if action was taken against one who raised such issues, then others should face similar consequences too.
"Action should be taken against all who touch on such issues," he said in a press conference yesterday with Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Lim said this after being asked about Gerakan suspending its Johor delegate Tan Lai Soon for saying Malays were "pendatang" (foreigners) during the party's 43rd annual delegates conference recently.
Lim, who is DAP secretary-general, also urged people to go beyond polemics on ethnic origins, noting all citizens were Malaysians.
"This is not only the stand of the DAP but also of the state government," he added.
Anwar meanwhile echoed similar sentiments saying discussions on issues should be forward thinking.
"We must give future generations the chance to feel that they are legitimate citizens," he said.
On Deepavali being given a two-day holiday if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) assumed federal power, Anwar said rights and dignity were more important.
"We should give the people justice and their rights," he said.
Both had earlier attended a Deepavali open house hosted by Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy. -Sundaily
